Product Description

AZ61A Magnesium Alloy Sheet

Product Overview

AZ61A magnesium alloy sheet from Huona is a high-performance structural magnesium alloy tailored for applications requiring superior strength, enhanced corrosion resistance, and excellent formability. Unlike the more common AZ31B grade, AZ61A features a higher aluminum content, delivering improved mechanical strength and hardness while maintaining low density and lightweight properties. Manufactured via precision hot rolling and controlled solution heat treatment, this sheet offers uniform grain structure, consistent mechanical properties, and a smooth mill finish, making it ideal for demanding automotive, industrial, and aerospace applications.

Core Specifications

  • Alloy Grade: AZ61A (Magnesium-Aluminum-Zinc Alloy, 6% Al, 1% Zn)
  • Typical Dimensions: 1.5mm × 400mm × 600mm (custom thickness 0.8–8.0mm, width/length available)
  • Chemical Composition:
    • Mg: Balance
    • Al: 5.8–7.2%
    • Zn: 0.4–1.5%
    • Mn: 0.15–0.5%
    • Si: ≤0.10%, Cu: ≤0.05%, Ni: ≤0.005%, Fe: ≤0.005%

  • Density: ~1.80 g/cm³ (≈2/3 the density of aluminum, 1/4 of steel)
  • Mechanical Properties (Temper O):
    • Tensile Strength: ≥310 MPa
    • Yield Strength: ≥170 MPa
    • Elongation: ≥12%

  • Temper: O (annealed) / H24 (strain-hardened and partially annealed)
  • Compliance: ASTM B90, GB/T 5153, RoHS 2.0, REACH

Key Differentiating Advantages

1. Enhanced Strength & Hardness Over AZ31B

With a higher aluminum content, AZ61A delivers a 7–10% increase in tensile strength and yield strength compared to AZ31B, making it suitable for load-bearing components where structural rigidity is critical. It offers improved resistance to deformation under stress without sacrificing the lightweight benefits of magnesium.

2. Balanced Formability & Machinability

Despite its higher strength, AZ61A maintains excellent formability, supporting cold bending, stamping, and deep drawing operations with minimal cracking. Its uniform grain structure also reduces tool wear during CNC machining, enabling the production of complex, precision parts with tight tolerances.

3. Improved Corrosion Resistance

The controlled alloy composition and low impurity levels (especially iron, nickel, and copper) minimize galvanic corrosion risks. AZ61A forms a dense, protective oxide layer, providing better atmospheric corrosion resistance than AZ31B, particularly in industrial and marine-adjacent environments. Optional surface treatments (anodizing, chromate conversion, or PTFE coating) can further enhance durability.

4. Excellent Weldability & Assembly Compatibility

AZ61A exhibits good weldability via TIG/MIG processes, with reduced susceptibility to hot cracking compared to higher-aluminum magnesium alloys. It is also compatible with common joining methods (riveting, adhesive bonding), enabling seamless integration into multi-material assemblies.

5. Optimized Thermal Stability

The alloy maintains consistent mechanical properties across a wide temperature range (-50℃ to 120℃), making it suitable for applications subject to thermal cycling, such as automotive powertrain components and industrial machinery parts.
