AZ61A straight cut magnesium filler wire in 1.6 mm diameter, supplied in 1000 mm rods for TIG welding of high strength magnesium tube and extrusion assemblies. With roughly 6 percent aluminium, the deposit reaches a higher tensile and yield strength than AZ31 while keeping good ductility — which is why this grade is a common choice for bicycle frames, e-bike structures and sports equipment built from AZ61 extrusions.
- Higher aluminium content than AZ31 lifts weld metal tensile strength to the 275–305 MPa range after natural ageing.
- Closely matched to AZ61A tube and extrusion chemistry, so colour, hardness and corrosion behaviour stay consistent across the joint.
- Smooth drawn surface with consistent roundness feeds evenly through manual and semi-automatic torches.
- Clean, low-hydrogen melting practice limits gas porosity in fillet welds on thin-wall tube.
- Straight 1000 mm rods keep the arc length steady around mitred tube joints and tight cluster welds.
- Batch traceability with heat number printed on the bundle label.
| Element | Composition (% by weight) |
|---|---|
| Aluminium (Al) | 5.8 – 7.2 |
| Zinc (Zn) | 0.40 – 1.50 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.15 – 0.50 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.10 max |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.05 max |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.005 max |
| Iron (Fe) | 0.005 max |
| Magnesium (Mg) | Balance |
Chemistry is verified on every heat and reported against the AZ61A designation requirements of ASTM B90/B90M and GB/T 5153. A mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) is issued per lot on request.

- TIG welding of AZ61A magnesium bicycle frames, seat stays and chain stays.
- E-bike frames, cargo bike racks and lightweight chassis welded from magnesium tube.
- Sports equipment and outdoor gear where stiffness-to-weight ratio matters.
- Welding of magnesium extrusions and forged fittings in transport equipment.
- Repair and reinforcement of magnesium tube structures after impact damage.
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Process | AC TIG (GTAW) |
| Current for 1.6 mm filler | 70 – 120 A, AC |
| Shielding gas | Argon 99.99 %, 12 – 18 L/min |
| Joint preparation | Degrease, stainless brush, remove anodising locally |
| Preheat | 80 – 120 °C on wall thickness above 4 mm |
| Post weld | Natural ageing; stress relieve at 150 °C for 1 hour if required |
Magnesium is welded in AC mode to break down the refractory surface oxide. A clean, freshly brushed joint, argon shielding and short arc length give the most stable results. Keep filler rods in the sealed bag until the moment of use, and store opened bundles in a dry cabinet.
- Straight rods bundled in 1 kg, 2 kg or 5 kg lots, wrapped in VCI paper, sealed in aluminium foil vacuum bag with desiccant, then packed in rigid tube or plywood case.
- Net weight per case 20 to 25 kg. Custom bundles, printed labels and neutral packing are available.
- Stock sizes ship in 7 to 10 working days; custom diameters and cut lengths in 15 to 20 working days.
- Diameters 1.2 mm to 3.0 mm are held in regular production, so mixed-size orders can be consolidated into one shipment.
- ISO 9001:2015 controlled production from billet extrusion to final drawing and packing.
- Diameter, ovality, straightness, surface and chemistry are inspected lot by lot; spark and XRF checks are recorded.
- OEM service: customer brand printed on label and case, custom cut length, custom bundle weight.
- Sample orders from 20 kg are accepted so the filler can be trialled on your own joint configuration before volume purchase.
Please confirm grade, diameter, straight cut length, bundle weight and estimated annual quantity when sending an inquiry. We will reply with the matching technical data sheet and the current price per kg.
