Product Description
Product Overview

AZ31B straight-cut magnesium filler wire in 1.2 mm diameter, supplied in 1000 mm rods for automated and manual TIG welding as well as wire arc additive manufacturing. The wire is extruded and multi-pass drawn from certified AZ31B billet, giving a uniform diameter, a clean bright surface and a stable feed in push-pull torches, so bead width and layer height stay repeatable across long deposition runs.

Grade AZ31B
Diameter 1.2 mm
Form Straight cut 1000 mm
Process TIG / GTAW
Packaging Vacuum packed
Key Features
  • Constant 1.2 mm diameter with a tolerance of ±0.02 mm for repeatable layer height in additive manufacturing.
  • Bright, oxide-free surface and degreased finish, which limits hydrogen pickup and porosity in the deposited metal.
  • Low aluminium content keeps the arc stable and the weld pool fluid enough for thin-wall deposition without burn-through.
  • Straight 1000 mm rods are easy to handle in robotic and CNC welding cells and reduce wire cast and helix problems.
  • Each heat is chemically verified and issued with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate on request.
  • Vacuum packed with desiccant so the rods reach the customer in the same condition they left the drawing line.
Grade AZ31B Nominal Chemical Composition
Element Composition (% by weight)
Aluminium (Al)2.5 – 3.5
Zinc (Zn)0.6 – 1.4
Manganese (Mn)0.20 – 1.00
Silicon (Si)0.10 max
Copper (Cu)0.05 max
Nickel (Ni)0.005 max
Iron (Fe)0.005 max
Magnesium (Mg)Balance

Chemistry is verified on every heat and reported against the AZ31B designation requirements of ASTM B90/B90M and GB/T 5153. A mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) is issued per lot on request.

Typical Applications
  • Wire arc additive manufacturing and robotic deposition of magnesium components
  • Prototype and small-batch production of lightweight brackets, housings and fixtures
  • TIG welding and repair of AZ31 sheet, plate and extruded profiles
  • Fabrication of magnesium frames, covers and enclosures where weight saving drives the design
  • Rework and build-up of worn magnesium parts in maintenance workshops
Welding Guidance
Parameter Recommendation
ProcessAC TIG (GTAW) or automated cold metal transfer variant
Current for 1.2 mm filler50 – 90 A, AC, high-frequency start
Shielding gasArgon 99.99 %, 12 – 18 L/min
Joint preparationDegrease, stainless brush, weld within 8 hours
PreheatNot required below 6 mm section thickness
Interpass temperatureKeep below 150 °C on thin sections

Magnesium is welded in the AC mode to break down the refractory surface oxide; a clean, freshly brushed joint, argon shielding and short arc length give the most stable results. Keep filler rods in the sealed bag until the moment of use, and store opened bundles in a dry cabinet.

Packing and Delivery
  • Straight rods bundled in 1 kg, 2 kg or 5 kg lots, wrapped in VCI paper, sealed in aluminium foil vacuum bag with desiccant, then packed in rigid tube or plywood case.
  • Net weight per case 20 to 25 kg. Custom bundles, printed labels and neutral packing are available.
  • Stock sizes ship in 7 to 10 working days; custom diameters and cut lengths in 15 to 20 working days.
  • Diameters 1.2 mm to 3.0 mm are held in regular production, so mixed-size orders can be consolidated into one shipment.
Quality and Ordering
  • ISO 9001:2015 controlled production from billet extrusion to final drawing and packing.
  • Diameter, ovality, straightness, surface and chemistry are inspected lot by lot; spark and XRF checks are recorded.
  • OEM service: customer brand printed on label and case, custom cut length, custom bundle weight.
  • Sample orders from 20 kg are accepted so the filler can be trialled on your own joint configuration before volume purchase.

Please confirm grade, diameter, straight-cut length, bundle weight and estimated annual quantity when sending an inquiry. We will reply with the matching technical data sheet and the current price per kg.
